Dean's light slumber was interrupted by the sound of two soft pairs of sandals and the gentle snoozing on the sunbed beside him. He raised his head from the shade of the olive tree above him, noting two women settling down on sunbeds a few feet in front of him in the sun. After swatting away the umpteenth fly with the back of his hand, he decided to adjust the back of his bed higher so that he could study the newcomers in more detail.

There were precious few people around anyhow. The exclusive hotel's garden poolside was renowned for being far too shaded thanks to the Mediterranean trees and shrubs scattered around and the high hotel structure surrounding it on three sides - and for being a haven of quiet, and a place to get away from the thronging mass of locals crowding the beaches.

The newcomers were two women in their late thirties or early forties, British in all likelihood with the pale-pinkish skin hue they always started their first days of vacation with. That explained why they'd stay in the hot 3 o'clock sun, showing the lack of common sense that only tourists could. Still, they looked fine enough, with tummies that had just enough flesh to tell you that they had chosen the spa hotel to make up some hours in its gym and treatment rooms.
