I always have marveled at how circumstances can combine to shape events. This series of circumstances were right up there. I had been going to electronics school for 2 years. Graduation was fast approaching, as was the birth of my first child. I was running around to interviews, anxious to start a new career and have some good medical benefits now that we would have a child and my wife wouldn't be working for a while at least. It is expensive enough living on Long Island without having a pile of medical bills to pay. We had been married 2 ½ years now and were looking to make a better life for ourselves. I was tired of the dirty, hard work of new construction plumbing, all though the job had left me in the best physical condition I had ever been in. We were 2 weeks away from the baby's due date when I landed a job. The pay was good, the benefits fair, and there was a company car to boot, a very unexpected perk. There would be some travel for training, especially in the first year, but that was okay.

It was Thursday night; my wife and I were supposed to work our last days at our current jobs on Friday. Well, you know what they say about the best laid plans; my wife went into labor and gave birth to our daughter at 3 AM, two weeks early. Things went well and she and our daughter came home Sunday afternoon. I started my new job Monday morning. I showed up with about 4 hours sleep and ran into my new boss as I entered the building. Before he could say anything, I handed him a cigar. After some congratulations, he bought me a coffee. The new job was great; I really liked the work, the guys, the being on the road. ...
