Holly wondered what made her take a class on the history of erotic literature. All the reading seemed to be either boring or infuriating, and the current assignment fell into the latter. She sat in the cafeteria looking at the notes she had made on Story of O, she was too embarrassed to be seen in public actually reading the book. She had a week to write a paper analyzing the novel but didn't even know where to start. How could the things described possibly appeal to anyone, especially a woman? For that matter, any man that enjoyed reading about or doing such things had to be one sick misogynist. It was understandable that girls going through adolescence might read it for the shock value, but as a grown woman she could not put together any appreciation for it.

The assignment was to pair up with another person from the class, discuss the book, and each person write a paper describing their impressions of the book before and after meeting with their partner. Tomorrow she would be meeting with Stephanie, who she knew by sight but with whom she had never really spoken. Already feeling frustrated, Holly picked up her books, went back to her dorm room, and started typing up the first part of the assignment.
