Tommy sat on the floor in the empty house that he had bought only 8 weeks earlier. It was to be the house where he and his bride, Melanie were going to live, to raise a family. He felt as if he could just get the pain to stop, he could move on.

For his dreams had been shattered, smashed as the car that Melanie had been driving when she was in her fatal accident had been. Melanie, the girl he had loved since he first saw her was dead. Six weeks earlier, he had made the dreadful trip to the hospital in NYC where she had been flown to the trauma unit. He saw her only once and he had been horrified at her appearance. After that first time, he had been banned from her room and was met by security everytime he came back. Melanie's parents, more specifically her mother blamed him for the accident because Melanie had been on her way to see him when she had the accident.

Three weeks later, her parents had her moved to Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. A week later, he received the news from a short cold phone call from Mrs. Taylor herself, informing him that no thanks to him Melanie had died without ever regaining consciousness and that he would be wise not to attend the memorial service and to never contact them again. She had never been happy that her daughter wanted to marry him.
