The college didn't have nearly as many sections of General Biology in the spring semester as they did in the fall, so my academic career was brief. Fortunately, the price of beef went up and my pigs were exceptionally robust, so I was doing pretty well without the job. I got my final paycheck in the mail on December 31. I didn't have any bills that were urgent, and I didn't feel like facing holiday traffic, so I waited till the morning of January second to deposit it. Besides, Penny, one of the tellers at the branch near my house, is moderately attractive and knows me by name. She even pretended that I wasn't the thousandth person to make a joke about someone with her name working at a bank. Since I wasn't teaching any more, Fawn wouldn't distract me from pursuing her.

I went to the table in the middle of the lobby and filled out my deposit slip. I could see Penny helping a customer at one of the Commercial Account windows, and I thought I caught her eye too. The line was kind of long, and I ended up in the queue right before the last U-turn. Two customers finished their business at the same time, so I moved to the other side of the "snake". A nearby voice called, "Professor!"

I looked to the left and back a little, and Fawn was waving to me! I waved back. The line moved again, and we were face to face. "Fawn!" I replied excitedly.
