7. Tom's run in.

April and long awaited spring was just around the corner. Life was returning to the valley and more particularly the small town of Tamworth. Thomas Stutely was improving in leaps and bounds from Roland's stern training. As a result, he started spending a bit more time at the tavern, eager to spend even more time with the former crusader who turned out to be twice the man Walter Fitzherbert was or ever had been.

Obviously the tavern was a watering hole for both men and women in the small community. Gossip was shared, assignations arranged and even business transacted at times. Ale was the big seller, however, Roland was able to purchase some wine at a good price by letting the hitherto mentioned merchant use the new stable free of charge. The wine didn't sell as quickly as the ale but it did increase the profits to some extent. In that way, Meg was able to hire a part time girl to help them out on Friday and Saturday nights which was when the business became very brisk. The tap room could hold only some three dozen persons. Roland mentioned on more than one occasion that the small tavern could be made larger. Meg told him that the space was adequate as many of the farmer folk rarely could afford the price of a drink. Their clientele catered mainly to men of merchandise, the garrison and their wives or women and a few of the more prosperous families around town. Even Sir Robert made an occasional visit. However, it was usually in mid week ...
