The interior wasn't anything to write home about - it was grimy and poorly lit, and it smelled of smoke and piss and disinfectant. But securitywise, it was one of the better public toilets in downtown Oklahoma City. It was below street level, so you walked from the sidewalk down a flight of steps as if entering a subway. The pale green tile walls of the place amplified each footstep, so if you were involved in anything in one of the stalls or at the urinals, you got plenty of warning.

It was my second visit- and I got the familiar combination of anticipation and anxiety in the pit of my stomach when I descended those steps- I was barely 18 and had just begun to truly explore my sexuality. I'd been with two girls, but I'd had a number of furtive adolescent homosexual episodes over the years. They were unfulfilling, but enough to convince me that I was attracted to men and wanted to learn more about them.
