It stunk. The air was heavy with the stench of crime and corruption. A smile formed on my lips as I dropped the cigarette I was smoking onto the sidewalk and ground out the glowing tip under the toe of one foot. This was my kind of town.

I liked to think of myself as an opportunist, but people had other names for me, none of them kind. Fuck it -- fuck them. I had a right to live, I figured, and to survive I had to do things others didn't necessarily like. Most people didn't like to look at the dark side of life, but when they did they'd see me. Welcome to reality, welcome to hell, at least to my version of it.

I'd just arrived in this small Midwestern town after stepping off a bus, watching as the diesel engine roared and the silver monster disappeared into the night. My fucking savior. Had it not been for its timely arrival I would very likely have been killed. I had a real bad habit of leaving places on a bad note. Fuck it.
