IN THE DARK OF NIGHT CH. 02 By AsylumSeeker

The place was quiet when I woke up the next morning. A hint of sunlight was peeking through the only window in the room, partially cloaked by a plain white, half-closed curtain. Extracting my body from around Daisy as carefully as possible to avoid waking her, I got out of bed and glanced out the window.

There was nothing for as far as I could see -- only flat land, fields, a few fences, and a gray ribbon of two-lane road. The storm had left a thin glaze of ice on the grass and along the tops of the fences. In the morning sunlight it sparkled like diamonds. Welcome to nowhere.

Quietly leaving the room wearing only my undershorts, the rest of my clothes in one arm, I found the bathroom and cleaned up before dressing. Recalling the squeaky steps I walked down to the extreme right side, avoiding creating much of the noise we had last night.

In the light of day it appeared that Stan's bar was also the far edge of town, at least in this direction. That left only one other to walk in with any expectations of finding signs of civilization. I could see a few houses a short walk away and suspected that as I got closer even more of the town would reveal itself.

Not long after I'd started I could hear the sound of an engine ...
