The King and I

It was just after dawn when we rode into the small village of Ahgarton. It wasn't a very memorable place, just an ordinary little settlement nestled on the side of a valley by a fast-flowing stream. But it would turn out to be a memorable visit for the King and I.

"Who goes there?" said a guardsman, stepping out into the road before us, a rusty short sword held out in front of him.

"Lower your sword, villager," I commanded him, but the guard stood his ground. It was commendable and I wouldn't expect any less from any true man of our country, "My name is Lord Mors Greenhand, and I am the King's Herald."

The guard blinked, then his eyes flitted from me to the man on the white horse behind me. He took a long while to speak, during which the tip of his levelled sword wobbled and swayed. "So... This is the King?"

"It is," I spoke truly, and the guard lowered his weapon, "You may address him as Your Majesty only."

The guard finally sheathed his sword and took a deep gulp, "Your Majesty, I was only doing my duty to protect your humble village. I meant no offence." ...
