Greed, aka avarice, is the excessive desire for wealth or possessions. Greed is its' own punishment, because too much is never enough. In essence, the more you acquire, the more you desire. The true evil of avarice comes from how it brings misery upon all. Pope Gregory equated greed with murder, saying ‘He who keeps for his own use what could provide for the poor is slaying all those who could have lived from his excess.' Avagrius, the original author of the deadly sins, tell us greed brings ‘famines that are sure to come, sickness that will visit us, the pinch of poverty.' Other faiths also warn of the dangers of greed. Taoism teaches that greed is the source of all man's evil. Buddhism teaches that suffering comes from the craving for earthly possessions and the greedy are punished by being reborn as starving spirits. The corresponding Heavenly Virtue is Charity.
