I'm a virgin.

Well, I'm not really but I pretend I am. I have this purity ring that I started to wear when I was a young teenager before I knew any better. It says that I'm going to stay a virgin until I get married. I was brought up in a small town in one of those red states full of evangelical Christians. One of the reddest of the red states, in fact. Sex before marriage is something that just isn't done. But this being America we don't just not do something, we create jewelry to pledge that we are not going to do it, that we will not fall into temptation. I still wear my purity ring, of course, because once you start you can hardly stop without provoking some questions that you don't want to answer.

When I first wore it, I knew nothing about sex. I knew it was bad, outside of marriage. I knew that touching myself was bad. I knew that my naked body was bad. Seeing someone else's, or a photograph, was worse. I had all the beliefs that I had been brought up with. You don't even realize that these are beliefs, and that there might be other places or other people who have other thoughts. It's like being a fish, you don't realize that there is water: you live plugged into an asexual virtual reality without realizing that you have a fully sexual body ...
