Jean excused herself from the dining room table and headed to the kitchen to start coffee. Gil's wife Pam got up with her and began to bus the table. She loaded all four plates, with silverware and glasses on one arm. Somebody had once been a waitress. The ladies met next to the sink. Jean spoke first.

"Oh, thanks. You didn't need to do that. That is so nice of you. Frank really likes working with Gil, and now I guess I really like you."

"Yeah, and Gil thinks Frank is doing a great job for the company. Blah, blah, blah. Look...I'm what they call a trophy wife. Gil dumped his first wife three years ago so that I would sleep with him, cause no way was I gonna go behind his wife's back. They got no kids, and the ex is fixed for life so I don't feel all that bad for her. I had to sign a pre-nup, so I won't get much when he eventually tires of me too, but for now I'm sitting pretty. And that's fine with me. I have no say in how he treats Frank, so let's just be friends, OK? Besides, I already like you. So lighten up and stop trying to kiss my ass, not that I wouldn't like you to try that for real."

Pam smiled, so Jean took that as the joke she hoped it was intended. Pointing to the bottle on the counter that the Bertrams had brought as a gift, Jean asked, "Ya think they would rather we open that, instead of some French roast?"
