The geologists suggest that an earthquake a few hundred years ago shifted the earth, leaving the cave dry and the water that once had formed it became an artesian well flowing from a crack in the rock a hundred yards down the hill. I can't argue with that, but I will attest to the value of that dry cave as a place to age fine cabernet. It sits on the property of a small Napa Valley winery that produces only about 1500 cases of cabernet sauvignon each season. One hundred year old redwood racks hold the oak barrels as they age in the controlled environment deep in that cavern. And after a while of this, the wine goes into bottles for a few more years, and then off to the lucky few on the list. These folks, if they are smart, bottle age this treasure for even more years, and then crack it open on special occasions, for this is truly a special wine. You won't find this one in the stores, for every drop is already claimed before it is bottled, and the waiting line just to get on the list of folks who get a case or two is quite long.

You might wonder how a humble writer like I got on that list, for I didn't inherit the privilege, nor did I win the lottery. But the third generation owner of the vineyard is an avid reader, and when my second novel made it big, he became a fan, and from then onward I could look forward to a gift case of this ambrosia each fall. Don't worry that his family suffered from the loss of income, for although they could fetch nearly a thousand dollars a case for this fine wine, they made far more from bottling and selling the lowly artesian spring water as it flowed ...
