It was a day during the following week, very early in the evening, when my doorbell rang again just after I got home from work. I opened the door and there was Pippa. She'd been out for a run and was dressed in dark blue running shorts, a light blue vest and a grey sports bra. I could see a sheen of sweat on her arms and darker patches on her vest. Even in November the central valley could be hot.

I stepped back to let her in. I was about to ask her what she wanted when she started talking, words pouring out over each other.

"I've been doing a lot of thinking while I was out running and I decided...well, I want...will you? Oh god, I'm like a ten-year old barely able to get a word out. I mean...I realized..."

I put my arms around her and pulled her against me. I could feel her trembling again like she had that first night, a bundle of nerves. I was pretty sure I knew why.

"Pippa," I said. "Calm down. How's this for an answer to your question. Take off your clothes. Go and have a shower. Lie down on my bed. And I'll go and find a towel and a glass of wine." I paused, wondering if I'd guessed right. "And a condom."

"I have no idea how you worked out what I was trying to say," Pippa said. She pulled her vest and sports bra off over her head, once more ...
