I couldn't believe what I was hearing, especially as I'd been on the contraceptive pill for about a year before I knew Jack. As I have an aversion to anti-depressants my Doctor had advised me to go on the pill as a method of controlling my mood swings while adjusting to life without my husband, so I found the pregnancy very hard to accept.

I couldn't understand how the pill had failed to prevent me conceiving.

Then, in answer to my questioning came the awful truth,

‘It was most probably rendered ineffective with the amount of substances you have taken into your system'

I won't lie to you; I was devastated, (no matter the reason), and my first instinct was to have a termination.

I didn't want kids. Not then, probably not ever and when I told Jack the pair of us spent the day in a sombre silence akin to bereavement. It wasn't until the following evening that we had recovered our senses enough to discuss it openly, but once we did we quickly decided that we would keep the child.

We are both of us ‘pro-choice', but our choice was not to end this ...
