Tanya came back to visit once, early in the fall. I told her that the new girlfriend hadn't lasted very long. On the surface, it had nothing to do with Tanya, but I'm sure I could have made it work if I hadn't been thinking about her. We talked about everything except whatever feelings we might have had for each other. After that, none of us heard anything from her for the rest of the semester. We were all worried until she came back for a visit again in January.

We got together at Jeannie's apartment. Jeannie was a friend who used to live in the dorm with us. Tanya told us she'd applied at schools across the country, and she was particularly optimistic about one in New Mexico. They were even printing resumes off Jeannie's computer. After about an hour, they were running low on ink. Tanya said she'd buy Jeannie a new cartridge, since she'd used so much, but she'd need a ride. That ride had to be me, because Tanya had come here by bus and Jeannie didn't have a driver's license.

It wasn't a total ruse--I'd seen the faint print on the last resume--but as soon as we were in my car, she asked if I was still planning my un-Valentine's party. The previous two years that I'd been there, I'd had a party in my dorm room with some unattached friends. Two years ago we hadn't met, and the year before she had to work. I told her I was, but right now it was just an informal plan, especially since two of my three closest friends (on campus) were in relationships.
