With my workday finished, I got in my car and drove off. Ordinarily, I'd drive straight home, but not that day. I was seized by a sudden desire to shop some more at the imported goods shop in the town where I live. I wanted to see if the store had received new and interesting foods or drinks to buy. I've shopped there before, so I guess one could call me a regular. The shop was run by a family from somewhere in Central Europe or the Balkans, with both parents and their American-born daughter, Mara, working there. I pulled in the shop's small parking lot, and walked in the store. The store shelves were filled with imported foodstuffs of all kinds: German chocolates, Bulgarian pickles, Polish instant soups, Hungarian sausages, and other commodities. It all looked so inviting that I had to keep from engaging in impulse shopping. At that moment, I was the only customer in the store.

"Hello," said Mara, in her feminine voice. She was a lovely young lady, with long, curly dark hair, and intelligent hazel eyes. She was shorter than me, and quite beautiful. I remember the first time I met her at the store, and I remember the glint in her hazel eyes as she saw me for the first time. Every time I'd visit the shop, Mara would usually be there, and I could swear she was flirting with me. At first, I thought that she was just being extra nice to her customer, but after a few such incidents, it became clear that she liked me on a deeper level. At the time, I was already in a relationship, but that relationship had ended just two weeks ago. ...
