The Youthful Awkwardness Wanes

I parked behind the shop and went through the storage door. Tim Harris was filling his satchel with new chemical bottles preparing to hit the road for another long day of pool tending. When he saw me, he stepped nearer to the path and over the noise of the running machinery, he shouted, "Hey, Jeremy. The boss wants to see you pronto. Don't go out until you see him!" I didn't shout back, while nodding, I gave him a salute and my left thumb up, went through the door into the main office and knocked on his door. He yelled come on in and when I did, I was greeted with a huge smile and a finger pointing to the seat in front of his desk. I sat, stared at him, and heard him saying, "I have received two pieces of good news this morning about you. Sit back while I tell you about it. Relax." I eased back in the chair wanting to hear what he had to say before I ask my questions about last Friday. Once he saw that I was at ease and listening closely, he took a drink of his coffee and put his arms on the desk, leaned toward me smiling again.

Through the smile he was saying, "The Jordan's were most pleased with your service Friday. Mrs. Jordan wants to switch from monthly and start bi-monthly service until Labor Day. I agreed it was the most economical for her and she wants every other Friday for the balance of the summer. Good news, huh?" I nodded in an unsmiling non-committal way and held my thumb up to satisfy his eagerness to finish his news.
