Stacy sat in her office, clicking furiously through a never-ending cascade of e-mails - her subordinates sending files for her approval before the weekend arrived. The sea of cubicles on the other side of her office door had begun to empty - eager young workers headed out the door to happy hour, others trying to get last bits of work approved before the week ended. Most stopped to wish her a good weekend, each increasing her desire to just get things done and get home herself.

Everyone had noticed how happy - buoyant even - she had been the past several weeks. She had a spring in her step and was much quicker with a smile. They all attributed it having finally settled into motherhood. They, of course, had no idea.

She looked up at the booming voice. Her boss, John, was leaning against her door. She was never quite sure what to think of him. A former top-level college football player, he looked the part, even all these years later. Half the staff thought he attained his high position, after a rapid ascent through the company, thanks to his football-hero local reputation. The other half thought he'd slept his way there after being seen awfully friendly with the female CEO. Nobody thought he'd earned it.
