The Nectar of Youth Part Two—Apple Picking

At work the following week, Old Man Woolsely brought up the subject of his nineteen-year-old daughter, Madeleine. He was concerned that she stayed at home far too much, and was wondering if perhaps I might come calling now and then to see that she got some fresh air. I was a bit surprised at this, but he did seem to trust me in our business relationship and had often invited me to his home for holiday meals when I was all alone. Then he told me that Madeleine had spoken about how much she enjoyed taking in the races the day that I had accompanied them there recently.

I proposed that I take Madeleine to pick apples and watch the hot-air balloon launch at the Bonner Orchard's fall festival. Hot air balloons must only fly early in the morning or late in the day to avoid strong updrafts that might strand the balloon higher than advisable. The launch was set for six o'clock in the evening. Since the days were getting cooler, I suggested that I stop by about four p.m. on Saturday to give us time to walk to the orchard. We would take our meal there, pick apples, perhaps warm ourselves in front of the bonfire, and return by around nine o'clock. Woolsely said that he would check with Madeleine, but he thought the arrangement would be fine since she rarely had anything scheduled with her cousins or her chums from high school days. The following day, the appointment was confirmed.
