CHAPTER 6

Steve walked out of the airport lounge to the waiting taxicab. It felt nice to be back home. He had been really looking forward to this day, as for a change, Jill would be waiting for him at home. She had rung up the other morning to tell him that her current assignment would be getting over a day early as the client was flying back earlier than planned.

They had been moving away from each other for some time, perhaps ever since Jill had joined Wilson & Wilcox. They had almost become tenants sharing the same house. Whenever Steve had tried to talk to Jill about their relationship or the lack of it, the standard reply he got was that after this assignment she would talk to her seniors about re scheduling her tasks, but for now she couldn't dream of adjusting her schedule as this would impact negatively on her performance and chances to move up the ladder ... and then she would jet off to meet her clients for solving their vexing international taxation issues ... Sometimes he wondered whether there was more to those frequent out of town visits.

Steve walked into the main hall with a broad grin on his face and then stopped short. The house seemed eerily quiet. He called out for Jill ...
