The Oak

It had seen a lot, although not all because "all" had not yet happened. But fifty years or so was enough time in which to see or experience a great deal.

It was tall, as tall as it needed to be. Strong too, as strong as was needed of it. Among its kind it was, and forever would be, a giant.

The oak tree surveyed its surroundings as it had from the moment the seed from a nearby parent had germinated and grown to a thin and weak sprig then growing stronger into a sapling. When others of its kind were unable to survive this one did.

The dark grey surface of the highway had cut through once dense woods. A path used originally by horses now carried modern cars. Fast, noisy, dangerous beasts. The tarmac was too close for comfort. Many of the tree's close companions had been destroyed in order to put distance between what remained of the woods and the mechanical travellers. For the safety of those ensconced the cars!

Its gnarled trunk already displayed scars of the attacks of the metal monsters, even though the road was straight.

Now its strength, its fortitude, its very existence was to be tested by ...
