Whispering Pines: A May/September Romance

Enoch woke up in the middle of the night. A scream caught on his lips as he sat up in bed soaked with sweat and shaking. He immediately turned on the lamp as if it would dispel the nightmare and spent a few minutes sucking in deep breaths and exhaling slowly.

He often times awoke from his nightmares disoriented and frightened. He looked about at his small cabin that had grown familiar to him over the past month. It differed greatly from the sleeping place in his nightmare. There, men were crammed three deep into uncomfortable bunks sleeping on straw mattresses.

He took a deep breath and smelled the scent of the saddle soap that he used on a pair of his boots earlier in the evening. It was preferable to the scents in his nightmare where the smell of human feces, acrid sweat, urine, and death were commonplace.

When his heart no longer felt as though it were hammering to get out of his chest, he laid back down on the soft mattress but left on the light. As he fell back asleep, he wondered if he would have to spend his life alone rather than subject a woman to his nightmares.
