The plan was for me to arrive at the apartment we rented in Playa del Carmen by around 5:00 PM. My wife was there waiting for me. She was in Mexico with a couple of friends who were all taking a Spanish course for the summer. I had taken 10 days off and was heading down to spend some quality time on the beach, in the ocean, in the rainforest and (of course) with my beautiful wife. My plane was delayed in Houston during a thunderstorm and I had no way to call her to tell her I was running about 4 hours behind. There was nothing I could do about that fact so I sat back and read my book tuning out the other passengers who were complaining (whining really) about something completely out human control. Once we took off things went smoothly and I eventually arrived, went through passport control and immigration and found a taxi for the 45 minute ride to PDC.

Upon arrival at the apartment complex the night desk clerk immediately knew who I was and explained that my wife was waiting in our apartment. He gave directions and said he would bring my bags up in a while. I was hungry and had travel hangover so I didn't question his statement, "In a little while..." I went to the penthouse apartment we rented and knocked on the door. I heard Annie call out that it was open so I headed into the room. She had scouted the place out and this was my first opportunity to discover anything about the place. I walked into a living room with white marble floors, modern leather furniture and a modern kitchen.
