Chapter 1: Janie discovers her clitoris

I have a friend who has a daughter Janie with Asperger's syndrome. An Aspy as they are known. Some people consider the term derogatory but it's what they call themselves, and when you are in a conversation you can't keep saying "people with Asperger's syndrome" so you just say "Aspies".

In case you don't know, I'd better explain. Firstly, Aspies all differ but basically they have a hard time empathizing with how other people feel. Since they don't really have any idea what other people feel, they don't see any need to fit in with societal conventions because they just don't get embarrassed. Embarrassment, after all, comes about by worrying about what other people think—you can't get embarrassed alone. Often, and Janie is like this, they are extremely practical and further have an ability to focus completely on what they are doing for long periods...not just hours but sometimes months. Some of them are very focused on something odd like baseball scores or historical dates, but Janie doesn't seem to have any strange habit like that.

Let me give you an example of the Aspy way of looking at things. One day Janie didn't lock the bathroom door. I walked in and she was sitting on the toilet. I was obviously embarrassed but she didn't care a bit and just stood up and pulled up her pants, giving me a flash of her pubes.
