I was going on this trip, no matter the separation, no matter the awkward timing, this was not something I was going to give up. A couple of years ago I took over the regional office of an international company having just sold my own business to them. I had a good succession plan in place so this company asked me to move 35 miles away to a bigger market and operate their company there. The catch was they were in a deep hole. A couple of employees had embezzled over $300K in the previous year and a lot of revenue producing employees had taken their customers to other companies in town. The company had lost over $1MM in the previous year and no one trusted them. It was the perfect opportunity to show that I could be the turn-around guy and bring this place back from the brink...I sure couldn't do much worse.

That was 14 months previously. At the end of last month the company was showing a net profit of just over $100K for the year, a turn-around of over $1.1MM in just thirteen months. I had negotiated a guaranteed bonus for the first two years not knowing how quickly things would turn around but because I had surpassed the management's expectations they offered me two weeks in the corporate condo in Beaver Creek, Colorado.
