It was a hot summer day, and the daytime heat did not fail to make me crave for my air-conditioned hotel room, and a refreshing shower. I was vacationing at the time with my wife Kelly, and our two young children at a family seaside resort. I enjoyed the good times our family had there, and looked forward to the few days we had left to enjoy ourselves. I was alone this time, dressed like an ordinary beachgoer, with a short-sleeved shirt, my swimsuit, and a pair of flip-flops. My beach towel was draped over my right shoulder, and, in a plastic bag, I had the rest of my beach-going accessories.

My wife wasn't with me that morning. She had to go pick up our two children, who were spending the day with another married couple, good friends of ours who were vacationing at the same resort. The couple was of the same ages as Kelly and me, and had two children, as well. We had reached an agreement that we'd take turns minding all four children on alternate days, so that one couple would have a free day to spend together. This day was Kelly and me to have to ourselves, so in the morning we hit the beach, and relaxed. However, later that that morning Kelly received a phone call on her mobile phone. It was the other couple, letting her know that an emergency had come up back home, and they might have to cut their vacation short.

"I'll go pick up the kids," Kelly had told me. "Please don't worry: I know where they're at. I'll call you when I pick them up, and I'll bring them to the hotel." ...
