When Sparks Fly Chapter 1: Artemis - Goddess of the Wild

Artemis Adams seems to be perpetually looking over her shoulder. She has a penchant for mirrors and other reflective surfaces so she can keep an eye on things behind her. Even now as she welds the sharpened end of a teaspoon onto an owl's face to serve as its beak, she has mirrors set up in the corners of her studio that are angled towards the door where she only needs to look up from her work to see who might be approaching.

She turns off her torch and lifts her welding goggles to examine her work. The owl is surprisingly life-like despite being constructed of odd bits of scrap metal. The eyes, made of large nuts, appear to be gazing down at possible prey from its perch atop a driftwood branch. She stands back and critically assesses the entire sculpture. Various patterns of kitchen flatware - the handles from forks and spoons because they are thinner than butter knives - create surprisingly realistic looking feathers at the end of the owl's wings and tail. Throughout the owl's body, she used odd metal pieces like keys, a few coins, and remnants of old hand tools. The most interesting is a brass plaque off of a sharp shooter's trophy fastened to the owl's back.

She is trying to decide if she should build up horns to create a horned owl when she hears the crunch of tires on her gravel driveway. Her trained ear tells her it is a pickup or big SUV. She could afford to ...
