When Sparks Fly Chapter 2: Vegas, Baby?

Steve insists that she call him Stump. At first Artemis thought it was silly. He's an amputee, having lost his left leg courtesy of a roadside bomb in Iraq. His missing leg has been a major obstacle in his life both physically and mentally. She accepts him, missing leg and all, because he is an awesome guy - sweet, funny, strong, and sincere - a rarity in her life. Why would he want to be constantly reminded of his missing leg by such a nickname?

Artemis doesn't necessarily feel sorry for him but she can relate to his experiences since losing his leg because she has scars of her own.

Okay, she does feel bad for him because he is a great guy and didn't deserve the lousy hand fate dealt him. His fiancé broke up with him while he was undergoing rehab. Her explanation was she just couldn't deal with it. His rehab was long and arduous. He didn't just have the loss of his left leg to contend with, his right leg was also badly injured and required a number of surgeries. Those wounds had to heal as well. That's not even touching on the psychological issues of losing a limb and a fiancé in one fell swoop.

They were in his bedroom in his apartment behind the office for his landscaping business when he explained his reasoning.
