An icy blast of wind bashed his face as he stepped from his SUV and walked into the Buffalo Inn, a local watering hole in this small mountain town. The temperature gauge on his car displayed -11 F when he turned it off and he believed it. In spite of coming from the warmth of his house directly into his garaged SUV with the heat blasting full, a shiver ran through him on the 20 foot walk into the bar. It didn't take long for the wind to cut through his layers and force the cold into his bones.

Inside the air was warmer, maybe not perfect, but definitely warmer. He found a small table in the center of the open floor area, faced the 80 inch television with the chair and ordered a Pabst from the bartender. The Denver Broncos had secured a spot in the playoffs and this was their first playoff game. It was still daytime but with the overcast skies and cold wind it felt like night already.

Matt had taken a weekend trip into southern Colorado from his home in Northern New Mexico. He was alone. No wife, no kid, none of his friends joining him this time. It was too cold for everyone else, so he went on his own. He has a vacation house in the resort town of Pagosa Springs and it was in this beautiful mountain valley that he found himself on this decidedly winter evening. A season pass holder at the area's ski resort, Wolf Creek, Matt had skied a half day before deciding it was too cold to continue any longer.
