I met Jan on the second day of orientation of my freshman year at university. She struck me right away as being an intelligent, fun, interesting and pretty girl. We were the same age and starting university together. Jan was born and raised in the town in which our university was located while I was from a place two states away (and a million miles in values.) Jan also had a boyfriend.

We became fast friends and our sphere of friends was quite similar. We did not hang out all the time but we certainly saw each other in class and at functions with our other friends. Her boyfriend was another ‘townie' who had grown up there and although he was two years older than us, Jan had been dating him since they were in high school together. Chad was nice enough and since they were together when I met Jan, I never considered her for a romantic or sexual relationship.

In the middle part of America the university is small, private, Christian and very, very conservative. I am not from that sort of background and enrolled there because of a full-ride scholarship. It was interesting to be from a socially liberal background and being 1992, it was made more interesting by political events of the time. In this regard Jan and I shared many views and we both liked a good debate. Our friendship was built on similar backgrounds and unlimited ability to discuss a topic to death with our friends.
