Chapter 1: An Early Christmas Present

They met at a Christmas party hosted by the university. Tallia's friend Sarah was an art professor there and recently broke up with her latest lover. She was expected to attend the function where board members and important alumni would be present but she didn't want to show up at the party alone so she enlisted Tallia's help.

Once there, Sarah forgot about her initial trepidation and soon held court among a group of her colleagues. As the group talked about current and former students, Tallia took the opportunity to mingle, listening in on conversations and picking up all kinds of interesting gossip that she planned to share with Sarah on their drive home.

The party was held at a prestigious downtown hotel that was built in the early part of the twentieth century and still contained much of its original charm and opulence. Tallia thought the Grand Ballroom resembled a large wedding cake with its Rococo trim and white, gold and silver color scheme. Beautiful crystal chandeliers sparkled like diamond jewels while rich gold damask draperies hung from nearly floor to ceiling windows that overlooked the city's skyline. A smaller reception room across the opulent hallway was used as the bar area.

She wondered over to one end of the reception hall to get away from the crowd. She first saw him near a marble fireplace with two pouty cherubs ...
