THE WEDDING GUEST

Ed and Ray had been best friends all through high school. They had met when Ed's family moved into the small town where Ray had lived all of his life. The two boys had many of the same interests and were soon inseparable. When Ed wasn't at Ray's house, Ray was at his, they played sports together, spent vacations together and dated some of the same girls. They were like brothers.

Ed's family loved Ray and he was always welcome to be with them. Ed's mother adopted Ray and treated him like he was her own son. Ed's gangly younger sister, Sheri, was constantly trying to hang around with them. Although she was five years younger, she thought she should be part of their crowd of friends. Like most teenaged boys, they resented her constantly trying to be a part of their plans. Sheri was always hanging around in the background, looking for an opportunity to become part of whatever they were doing. When the boy's graduated high school, Ed went into the Air Force and Ray went off to college. Sheri was just finishing the seventh grade when her brother and his best friend went their separate ways.

Like most people, Ed and Ray slowly drifted apart. They saw one another a few times when they were both home from school, but their visits home became less and less frequent. Ed had returned home after four years in the military and took a job in a local business. Ray's family had ...
