The Perks of Higher Education

Chesley Kolman stood at the window of her apartment looking across the line of trees along University Boulevard at the State University campus. Her mind was running at warp speed as she pondered her next move. Less than an hour previously she had received her Master's degree in Economics with the highest honors in the University's 114 year existence. The campus of just over 60 thousand students had never had a student like Chesley. She was the consummate student. She had no student activities. None. She had never had a date, never attended a dance, not a ballgame, not a pledge party, not a campus activity whatsoever. She wasn't a member of Facebook, Twitter, Google, Tinder, or any other sites that were used by young people today. To say she was unique was an understatement. Not to be alone though, there was a male student, David Doherty--pronounced 'doe-hurty'--with similar traits except for the fact that he was a member of the track team. He ran Cross Country and Marathons but not for a win or glory, he ran only because he loved running and the team offered him that opportunity. Faculty members were mostly astonished to find two students with such dedication to their studies that they forsook all other distractions. They both had participated in the graduation ceremonies today. They both spoke but in different schools to different students. They had met only once when they were undergraduates that also led their schools with high honors.
