I was happy to attend my niece's college cross country running meet. It was a special occasion, indeed: I hadn't seen Mary-Magdalene, my older brother's daughter, for five years. She was a second-year student at a private college, and I had some free time to make it there, to watch her compete. My brother and his wife were standing beside me at the finish line, and watched as the runners began making their way past the finish line.

"Mary-Magdalene!" my brother's wife shouted. "We're here," she said, waving her hand frantically. It was wonderful to see my niece once more, as she embraced her parents. Mary-Magdalene saw me, and, after a few moments of hesitation, she gave me a hug, too.

"Uncle Oscar!" she said with unconcealed enthusiasm. "I'm so happy you came." Mary-Magdalene had changed from the last time I saw her, years ago. She had grown up in stature, and was very athletic, with wiry long hair pinned in a bun on the top of her head. She introduced me to a nerdy-looking young man standing next to us; he was her boyfriend, Carl. The young man seemed to me like the type of fellow who must have gotten quite a few wedgies in high school from the jocks.

"This is my best friend, Brandi," Mary-Magdalene continued her introductions, gently placing her hand on the shoulder of another runner standing next to her. I smiled at my niece's teammate. Brandi was petite, athletic, with long blond hair gathered up in a ponytail, ...
