"A Thanksgiving To Remember" By Sureshot.Author's note: I've hesitated writing about this for some time. It is a true story but the names have been changed, even though all the main people are no longer living, except me. It is out of respect for their memory.
It was the fall of 1969 and I was anticipating a long Thanksgiving vacation with my girlfriend Aimee Adams, who was a Sophomore at the University of Missouri in Columbia. Her roommate was Stephanie Baxter. My name is Steve Crowder. The three of us were inseparable since grade school. We were from Independence, MO. We all graduated from Van Buren high School in the top 5% of our class. I got a scholarship offer to the University of Kansas in Lawrence and the girls were given scholarships to U of M. It meant we were about 3-4 hours apart, which, in college, is the same as forever. Over the course of October and early November we burned up the phone lines to each other. In mid-November my folks informed me that they had a last-minute business trip to Seattle and I'd be on my own for the holiday. Aimee's mother Denise quickly came to the rescue and invited me to stay with them. She'd been widowed for three years since her husband Michael was killed in a hunting accident in Wyoming. Michael and my father were fraternity brothers at the U of M. Stephanie's dad was also friends with both of them, although he steered clear of frats.
