HEADS YOU WIN, TAILS YOU LOSE...SOMETIMES

Being from New York and going to college in the Midwest had advantages and disadvantages. The one big disadvantage was how far you were from home if you didn't have a lot of money to fly back and forth. One of the advantages was there were a lot of other New Yorkers who went to the same college or nearby colleges and universities that made chartering a train years ago for students a practical solution to traveling home for long holidays and breaks.

On one Christmas/Winter Break trip the demand was so high for the reasonable price charter train seats, that the organizers were also able to add additional cars to the train chartered by other colleges along the way. The trip from Indiana to New York's Grand Central Station took 17 hours so there was plenty of time and places to add new cars and one of them was in upstate New York where one of the State Teachers' College added a car around midnight. We usually got into Grand Central about 6 am.

Very few riders like me, who got on at the starting point in Indiana, slept on the way home, it was not only difficult to do in a seat but there was too much excitement, too much booze, and too much noise so guys just hung out in small groups drinking and in those days, smoking. ...
