Chapter 4: The Owl

October 2014

Oskar Oberlin went out behind his workshop to have a cigarette. It was one of his few vices. He took a drag on his cigarette and expelled the smoke from his lungs. He looked at the cancer stick and wondered why he didn't quit after his wife Sasha was stricken with ovarian cancer almost nine years ago. Then he remembered the soothing nicotine that helped him survive her illness. Without it he probably would have lost his mind. Now there didn't seem to be much point in quitting. He took a few more drags then scratched the cigarette butt out on the bottom of his boot and threw it in a coffee can filled with sand next to the door before reentering his workshop.

His workshop smelled of oil based wood stain, paint, polyurethane, and sawdust. He was a furniture maker by trade who also dabbled in wood sculptures. Many of his furniture pieces - cabinets, tables, chairs, and dressers - incorporated intricate wood carvings reminiscent of antique Black Forest furniture.

At six-four, Oskar wasn't a big man but he was lean. He was Swiss but looked more Italian because of his dark graying long hair and brown eyes. He still talked with a slight Swiss accent that often confused people because he picked up the local South Carolina dialect after ...
