My name is Isabella, and I am a journalist. I write for one of those free alternative weeklies that you can find in just about every major city, though I won't tell you where mine is, for reasons that will become obvious. I interned at the paper when I was in college, and I got a real job on staff a year after graduating, after doing another year's worth of interning at a normal newspaper. It was a fun job, doing a few mostly local stories a week, plus chiming in on whatever cultural thing we were doing at the time, and I occasionally got to spend a few months investigating and putting together a long-form piece. It isn't the New York Times, but people in my city read my work, and I know that a few look forward to it.

We do a few theme issues every year. There's a music issue every summer, a local politics issue every fall, and then two or three one-off special issues every year--an environmental issue, a gay rights issue, a TV issue. In addition to their regular work, every reporter has to write a story, or a couple of small stories, on the topic. The way it works is that we each pitch topics, and our managing editor--I'll call him Ed, because I'm lazy--approves them and assigns out a few more stories that the editors want to make sure get written.
