I remember reading once that the first known example of writing in the western world was an attempt to record the recipe for making beer. Shortly thereafter, some attempts to record business transactions began. But clearly we humans favored beer over business, as of course we should.

I am reminded of the value of beer frequently, and I don't required written directions. But then I don't have to make my own beer. I just drive down to the stop and rob and pick up half or a dozen and I'm fine. Likely I shall not forget how to do this. There was a time however, when just grabbing a six pack was not an automatic. I was not always over 21. That interminable wait from high school graduation until that one birthday that opened the gates to the beer aisle presented a challenge. I wanted the miracle of beer but lacked the wherewithal. And I wasn't alone.

We had the keys to the lake cabin, and a week to burn. There were supposed to be six of us, all founding members of the physics geeks club from North Central High School. Dad and Mom had given me the keys for that last week before we all scattered for college, without question. I guess they figured it would be six guys, because it was a physics club. They never even asked. Steve and Tom dropped out on Thursday. Susie called me on Friday because she had to bail early to check into her dorm. That left me, and Nancy and Karen.
