Returning to the southern Florida hotel she was staying in for the weekend, US Air Force Reserve Lieutenant-Colonel Julie Strong made her way to her room, and unlocked it with her key-card. The 40-year-old fighter pilot pushed the door, and stepped inside, and turned on the lights. It was a Saturday during one of her monthly Reserve drill weekends, and her working day had ended, with Sunday still to come.

In her civilian life, Julie was an investment advisor, but she appreciated the opportunity to fly an F-16 jet, even for only one weekend a month. Julie set her flight bag by the room closet, and looked around the room. It was spic-and-span clean, and familiar; she had stayed at that hotel numerous times before. For Julie, however, this time it was different: it was the first drill weekend without her husband, a newly-retired colonel with whom she had shared her pilot career. While removing her boots, Julie felt sadness in her heart from his absence, and let out a soft sigh. The attractive officer reached behind her head, and undid the regulation bun that restrained her shoulder-length blond hair. She smiled at herself in the mirror after that, remembering how often in the past she had done this, under her adoring husband's gaze.
