It all started shortly after my 50th birthday, when my husband, Jerry and I had dinner with Lynne and her husband, Dave. I'd known Lynne since 4th grade. We lived next door to each other as kids, went to the same schools and were in each other's weddings.

They had just moved back to Northern Virginia from the West Coast. Lynne was a commercial real estate broker who travelled the country, while Dave had just received a promotion to president of a national chain of pharmacies, which required relocating to the DC area.

They were excited to tell us about the house they rented for two weeks with four other couples on the Outer Banks of North Carolina this past summer. Lynne showed us pictures of this mansion right on the beach with five bedrooms and a swimming pool. Each room had its own bath and a private deck. It sounded fabulous. "Dave, if you have room for another couple, Barb and I would love to join you," Jerry suggested, and I nodded in agreement.

Once school started my fifth graders kept me busy: preparing assignments, correcting homework, etc. Jerry was the president of a major investment firm and kept crazy hours. I didn't hear from Lynne until October when I received an e-mail: "we're thinking of renting this house next summer on the Outer Banks. Interested in joining us?"
