Chapter 9: The Break

FBI Profiler Sydney Babcock sat in the middle of her hotel room bed looking through the information compiled on the suspect known as Michael White. Papers were strewn on the bed around her, a cup of black coffee cooling on the bedside table amidst crumbs from a long consumed chocolate chip cookie. A container from a takeout meal from Applebees sat empty on the bed. It was late, the hotel hallway barren, the room's air conditioner hissing quietly causing the drapes to flutter. She was dressed in yoga pants and an oversized T-shirt, dark framed glasses perched on the end of her nose.

She knew Michael White aka Michael Brenner aka David Michaels aka David Michael Cartwright was the serial killer dubbed The Slasher. Michael White was the identity he used when he wasn't using his real name David Michael Cartwright. He had a legitimate Wisconsin driver's license in the White name so he must have had convincing forged documents. Looking through the paperwork and making sense of all his aliases was like putting together a jigsaw puzzle.

She took a sip of her lukewarm coffee and looked at the notes she had scratched on a legal pad. She was the type of person who needed paper and pen, something to hold in her hand rather than look at a small computer screen. She was the same way with books versus electronic books. ...
