ON THE BEACH:

Gabrielle's friends all thought she was crazy -- renting a lonely beach house, long after the summer was gone. The house sat on a spit of land, reaching out to the ocean. One lonely dirt road led to the scene: isolated, serene, with a copse of trees barring her private world from view. There was one other house, a bit farther down, but it was always deserted this time of year: a late, warm September.

Gabby awoke to the silent alarm in her head. It was her first morning back here again in a year -- time for her morning ritual. She slid out from under the sheets, nude.
