Chapter 11: The Plea

The gym was empty at that hour and Charlie did some stretching exercises before hitting the treadmill. She normally ran and walked a couple of miles around her neighborhood before going to work but it was drizzling out so she opted for the gym in her apartment building.

Her feet made a comforting thump-thump sound as she got into her stride. A TV was on and she watched the local news. Of course they were talking about the Avenues West Murders. The Homicide Division had nicknamed the killer The Fisherman because they found fish scales on three of his four victims and figured the killer was probably a fisherman and the women picked up the scales in the back of his van or inside his garage or house. The press never picked up on the nickname.

A perky blonde newscaster said the police had a suspect in custody and showed his name and picture. A press conference was scheduled for 10:00 a.m. and the police chief would give the public more information about the case at that time. Then the reporter reviewed the murders, showing photos of where the women were found but no photos of the bodies. They did show some photos of the young women during happier times when they were smiling for the camera. They were snapshots the police provided the press that were found in the victims' apartments. ...
