Chapter 4: The Means

Wednesday, June 6, 1928

The shadows were deeper, the green more pronounced than it was four days earlier. The forest was also noisier. Birds flapped, twittering noisily overhead, busily building nests. Wildlife scurried about preparing for new litters or finding food for newborns. In the distance motorboats could be heard buzzing across the lake, a sign that summer residents had arrived. The weather was warmer even at that early hour, the sun sitting lazily over the eastern horizon.

The black gelding pranced and snorted along the dirt path. Its rider sat tall, her gloved hands and knees controlling the large horse. She was on high alert, her senses tingling with anticipation, a little frightened since a killer struck nearby and was still at large.

Paulina Stark avoided the area since she discovered Graziella Romano's body on a bed of white bloodroot flowers. It rained since that fateful ride and she hoped the blood was gone. Thankfully bloodroot flowers quickly wilted, replaced by new blooms or leaves that resembled water lily pads.
