Chapter 3: The Profiler

Charlie Parker woke up in her own bed. She left Joe's at midnight, driving across town to her apartment. He was asleep when she left and she kissed his forehead, leaving a sweet note saying she'd see him in the morning.

As she put on her running clothes, she thought about Joe. Their relationship was complicated. They had dated years ago, back when they were both in their early twenties, and just starting out on the police force. They worked out of the same precinct and started seriously dating, viewing one another as their significant other until the night he asked her to marry him and she said she couldn't.

Charlie's life growing up was filled with chaos and uncertainty. Both her parents were alcoholics. They fought and made up, hated and loved one another. There was no happy medium. It was always one extreme or the other. They both cheated and had no qualms about doing it in front of her and her two brothers and sister. Then her father was killed in a fire when she was thirteen and their lives turned upside down. Her sister left home for college, her brothers joined the military, and Charlie was left alone with her unhappy, alcoholic mother.
