Amber and her best friend, Monica, had spent the first three years of college dreaming of working at Camp Expedition. The circled the summer before their senior year, and talked about it almost every day.

Camp Expedition was unlike any other camp. The camp was set over hundreds of square miles, and was target at older high school students. Campers were given a map, their survival gear, and set out to "survive" a ten day expedition. Over the course of the camp, in teams of five to ten, they'd search for their next "expedition camp," where they'd have adventures and engage in activities, After one day at each camp, they'd set off in search of the next.

The expedition camps were intentionally remote. Two camp counselors were stationed at each, trained to manage their specific activities and help the campers figure out how to find their next camp. Because campers were hiking between camps, the schedule was practically luxurious. Counselors would have campers for a day, they'd camp on-site, and then they'd have a day with no campers at all, as they reset and waited for their next arrivals.

Amber and Monica had applied years in advance for their specific summer, because they wanted "water camp." Set on an island in the middle of a large lake, the camp was by far the most remote.
