It all began on Thursday morning. I was around at my best friend Samantha's for coffee at the time while dropping off a present for Andy, her 17-year-old son, who would be turning 18 on Saturday.

I'd watched him grow up these last five years from a teenage boy now into a man. Yeah, he was cute, but he was also my best friend's son.

"So, what have you got Andy for his birthday?" I asked before taking a long sip from the remains of my coffee.

"Well, it's kind of a surprise. So, if I tell you, don't let on to him," she cautioned me.

"It's safe with me. I promise," I assured her.

"You know how he loves his football team. Well, for his birthday I've got us tickets for a game."

"That's fantastic," I applauded her choice.

"It's an away game, and so I've booked an hotel for Saturday through to Sunday," Samantha informed me.

"He'll love that," I thrilled despite seeing my present, a Kindle plus a book collection of well-written erotic stories I'd carefully selected and downloaded, as an okay gift for someone his age.

"He's been on at me to let him go to a game for months now, ever since the new season had started," she explained.

From what I knew, the tickets for games weren't cheap, thanks in part to high wages and high transfer fees. Thankfully, televised games and match highlight programmes helped contribute towards that.

It was just after 10 am on Saturday morning when I received a distressing phone call from Samantha. Her mum wasn't feeling too well. The doctor had been called and had contacted Samantha to let her know.

In short, she asked me if I would take Andy to his game while she went and saw her mum. Naturally, I agreed in a heartbeat.

"What about his surprise?" I mentioned; her son no doubt figuring he'd be going with her.

"You're right. I best tell him and let him know you'll be taking him instead."

As quickly as I could, I packed a travel bag and headed over to Samantha's.

"Mrs Meadows," he welcomed me at the front door, a surprise tone to his voice at seeing me.

"What have I said about calling me Lucy, young man? Look at you. 18-years-old today. My have you grown," I smiled at him.

"Thanks for the present, by the way," he said, adding a wink.

"Well, you're a man now. I'm sure you'll find the book I downloaded informative. Where's your mom?" I asked, having dropped my bag just inside the hall.

"She's kind of upset. Her mum and all," he said solemnly.

"Let's wish your gran well. I'm sure it's nothing serious," I consoled him, it was, after all, supposed to be a happy day for the young man and I was determined to help him get the most out of it.

I went and found Samantha who was up in her bedroom packing.

"That's a lot," I said, noticing she had a medium size suitcase open on her bed compared to my travel bag.
